Game Studies have been established in our country for a decade. Long enough for them to have begun to permeate society, so little by little, names like Antonio José Planells, Antonio Loriguillo, Marta Martín, Beatriz Pérez or Víctor Navarro, they have been appearing more and more in the video game press. A trend that has served for the term game studies to gain notoriety, for it to be introduced into a community of gamers that is, now, closer than ever to discussion and academic debate. A discussion and a debate that, remember, are by and for all those who are interested.

This is the audience that should underline with a phosphor pen the next December 15, 2021, because on that date the first International Congress of DiGRA Spain, an unavoidable appointment that can mean a milestone in regard to this type of event. Let me tell you.

DiGRAES21 supposes the impulse of the Spanish version of DiGRA, the international association of investigation of the digital games.

Reinforcing Game Studies


National game studies have a development significant enough to have set their own questions and debates. Are already more than ten years of continuous dialogue on a stage (ours) that has voices of international projection. However, it is still a young community that does not have, for example, a regular and general meeting point. That is precisely what it aims to solve DiGRAES21, acting as a turning point to become a meeting place for critical and interdisciplinary debate. The congress aims to promote a local version of DiGRA, the international research association for digital games. And its central theme is: “The map and the game. The Game Studies in Spain “.

Its main objective is bring together all the people involved in game studies in our country. For this, it will have varied contributions and with different approaches to different forms of game (both analog and digital), inciting debate on the situation of the discipline in Spain and receiving contributions for obtain a portrait of the interests, projects and lines of research that are being carried out today.

The congress, led by the Dr. Antonio José Planells de la Maza and the Dr. Marta Martín (who have also coordinated the research groups together with the Dr. Aarón Rodríguez Serrano), has had the Doctors Ana Beatriz Pérez Zapata and Shaila Garcia Catalán as those in charge of communication. The local organization has been run by the Dr. Adso Fernández Baena and the Dr. Alexandra Samper Martínez, while the Doctors Víctor Navarro and Antonio Loriguillo-López have been in charge of a program that has, nothing more and nothing less than, 44 presentations and 68 authors.

In this sense, it is worth highlighting the presence of Susana tosca who, with more than 20 years of research behind her, combining aesthetics and Media Studies, is co-author of Transmedial Worlds in Everyday Life (Routledge, 2019), Understanding Videogames (Routledge, 2008) will allow Digital Literature: Hypertextual Paradigm (University of Extremadura, 2004); with Clara Fernandez Vara, who has combined the study of the video game with its development, taking an interest in …….
